Diesel dependency
Fuel delivery to off-grid sites is costly and disruptible, and carries local emissions, noise, heat and maintenance loads.
XCITY MINING INC. · THE AUTONOMOUS RENEWABLE MINE
XCITY MineOS is the AI operating system for autonomous, solar-powered mines — one supervisory controller that turns weather forecasts and mine data into physically executable machine schedules, coordinating renewable generation, long-duration storage and an autonomous fleet as a single system.
01 · The challenge
Electrifying a mine converts a fuel-logistics problem into an energy-availability problem — and the systems meant to solve it don't talk to each other.
Fuel delivery to off-grid sites is costly and disruptible, and carries local emissions, noise, heat and maintenance loads.
Photovoltaic output swings with irradiance, cloud cover, temperature, dust and soiling — rarely aligned with mine demand.
Drilling, hoisting, crushing, pumping and fleet charging spike together, exceeding economical inverter and generator capacity.
Mine schedulers chase production; energy controllers chase kilowatts. Run apart, one demands power that's gone while the other idles ready ore.
02 · The insight
Energy flow and material flow are the same problem.
A charging decision isn't just electrical demand — it reshapes material flow, road congestion, crusher feed and geotechnical exposure. MineOS optimizes them together, in one loop.
Two systems, working against each other.
One controller, coordinating every joule and every tonne.
03 · The solution
Every constraint of a remote, electrified mine — answered by one coordinated system.
Solar plus long-duration storage displaces diesel and its logistics — fewer deliveries, lower fuel bills, less exposure.
Solid-CO₂ storage carries the site through nights, cloud and multi-day storms — essential loads never drop.
Flexible work is shifted off the peaks, so you can right-size inverters and generators instead of overbuilding.
One AI controller schedules power, robots, haulage and charging together — the systems stop fighting each other.
Every parcel is produced by value-per-kWh, with verifiable per-tonne energy for low-carbon buyers.
04 · The architecture
Solar arrays sized to the site, the primary energy source.
A closed-loop CO₂ plant that stores surplus solar for nights and storms.
Machines that survey, drill, cut, load and handle material.
Driverless electric trucks moving ore on energy-aware routes.
Sensor network · digital twin · live telemetry
The controller jointly determines storage setpoints, robot work packages, haul routes and charging windows — then issues machine-executable commands and replans as conditions change.
05 · The control loop
Commands are issued for the near term, the world is re-measured, and the horizon recedes — with event-triggered replanning on cloud transients, failures, blockages, a detected person, or a CO₂ alarm.
Electrical, mechanical, geotechnical and environmental state.
Photovoltaic trajectory, ore grade, cycle times, storage state.
Jointly schedule energy, robots, routes and charging.
Translate the plan into equipment-specific setpoints.
Capture the physical result of every command.
Recede the horizon; update the digital twin.
Three time scales, one plan
06 · Long-duration storage
Batteries buffer seconds and minutes. For overnight, multi-day and weather-driven deficits, MineOS charges a closed-loop CO₂ plant — freezing carbon dioxide into dry ice, then recovering the energy on demand.
Closed-loop by design. CO₂ is the working fluid, not an emission — captured and recompressed, with a protected reserve held for essential loads.
07 · The autonomous fleet
Every mobile machine is a scheduled load and a mobile energy asset. MineOS plans work, routes and charging together — so the shortest path never triggers a power peak, a charger queue or a geotechnical risk.
Survey and prepare faces ahead of extraction.
Fragment rock within a set energy envelope.
Move material under precedence constraints.
Inspect pipelines and equipment continuously.
Routes chosen on traction and regen energy, not just distance.
Charged modules treated as mobile stored energy.
Downhill braking energy timed to uphill and charging loads.
Fleet charging scheduled into solar surplus, never into peaks.
Material identity is preserved from source block to destination — so blending and grade constraints hold even while rerouting around hazards.
08 · The optimization engine
A learned model proposes candidate schedules; a deterministic feasibility checker vetoes any command that breaks a hard constraint.
The objective weighs recovered mineral value, production shortfall, PV curtailment, storage loss, equipment wear, battery degradation, electrical peak, congestion and risk — subject to power-balance, storage, machine-energy, route and spatial-safety constraints.
09 · Energy-aware production
When a block is identified, MineOS opens a record that follows it from source to destination — so the mine can prioritize value recovered per constrained unit of energy, not just tonnes.
Choose the next work package by expected value per available kilowatt-hour.
Feed measured energy back to sharpen rock-hardness, route and tool models.
An internal record that can be signed or hash-linked — no ledger required.
10 · Safety & resilience
An independent safety supervisor can override any production plan. The optimizer cannot disable hardwired protection — it can only work within it.
On a CO₂ alarm: isolate flow, ventilate, and route machines out of the zone — regardless of production goals.
Long-duration energy ring-fenced for ventilation, dewatering, communications and electrical protection.
When predictions diverge from measurement, MineOS raises reserve and reduces autonomous authority.
Signed firmware, authenticated commands, segmentation and replay protection; stale commands are rejected.
Degraded but safe. If learned-model confidence drops or comms are lost, machines fall back to deterministic schedules and locally stored safe-state policies.
11 · In operation
Serve active loads, then freeze CO₂, charge fleets and advance flexible high-energy drilling.
Build stockpiles by the crusher, charge night-haul vehicles, verify the expander is ready.
Pre-build dry-ice inventory and stockpiles; discharge by load tier and predicted restoration.
Reroute only if the alternate path won't draw energy below the protected reserve.
Excess generation is never wasted — it becomes stored CO₂ inventory or real mine progress.
12 · What you gain
Measurable outcomes across cost, uptime, sustainability and control — from the first site.
Displace diesel and cut fuel deliveries, logistics and generator maintenance.
Overnight and multi-day resilience keeps ventilation, dewatering and comms alive — no diesel backup.
Peak-shaving lets you defer or avoid costly inverter and generator upgrades.
Energy passports steer production to the highest value per available kilowatt-hour.
Consistent 24/7 operation with fewer people working in hazardous zones.
Regenerative braking and site waste heat are recaptured and reused.
13 · The business case
Four levers that turn an autonomous, renewable mine into a stronger business.
Less fuel, fewer wasted haul cycles, and shaved peaks that let you right-size capital equipment.
Resilience through weather, nights and disruption safeguards output when others go dark.
Carbon-competitive metals for CBAM-exposed buyers and low-carbon offtake premiums.
Modular and retrofit-ready — add wind, geothermal or storage as the operation grows.
Sustainability as a commercial edge. Verifiable per-tonne energy accounting turns decarbonization into market access and premium pricing — not just a compliance cost.
The autonomous, renewable-powered mine — coordinated end to end by one intelligent controller.
